Root canal treatment is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or diseased, regardless of the cause. It is used to save a badly damaged tooth. The procedure consists of removing the pulp, disinfecting and sealing the tooth. Once fully grown, the tooth can function just fine without the pulp. It is much better to restore the tooth this way than extract it, as it’s cheaper and your natural tooth stays intact. Even though commonly perceived as very painful, nowadays the procedure is comparable to having a filling done. Inflamed roots hurt way more!
